Frequently Asked Questions - Getting Started
Do I need Google Earth to see a tour? No, but Armchair Vacations works great with Google Earth. Armchair Vacations stores info on tours on a variety of different topics, but you need a viewer to see them. You can now use either Google Earth, which is a separate application, or Google Maps, which is built in to your web browser. Think of Armchair Vacations as your Tour Guide, Google Earth as a private jet and Google Maps as an Express Airline. (Click Here) to go to Google Earth's download web page. It's free! And it doesn't require you to send any personal information to get it. If I have Google Earth, what will Armchair Vacations do? Google Earth has satellite images from all over the world. Armchair Vacations expands on Google Earth by acting as a guide to quickly locate the places you're trying to find and give you more information about them. Armchair Vacations links all these great places into tours. Some of the tours are vacation related, like Classic London . Some of the tours are educational, like the World's Famous Bridges . Some of the tours are just for fun, like Traveling with Doctor Jones . Most common personal computers can run Google Earth, including computers running Windows, OS X, and Linux. Check here for Google Earth's system requirement details. Are There Any Differences between Mac and PC? The Mac may not see Google Earth as Helper Application. When you start on a tour on a Mac, you may have no choice but to download the kml file to desktop. This will not stop you from running your tour. Simply double click on the downloaded file and the tour will continue from within Google Earth. Do I need a particular version of Google Earth? Armchair Vacations requires Google Earth version 4.2 or higher. Do I need to use any particular settings for Google Earth? Any settings are fine, but if you are new to Armchair Vacations or Google Earth, you might want to uncheck (or hide) the many display layers available in the lower left corner of the application. These layers provide lots of extra information, but they may block the image you were trying to see in the first place. What do I do when my computer asks about a KML file? The KML files are used by Google Earth to find the tour stop locations. Select "open with Google Earth" so that Google can use the file. Also check the option "Do this automatically for files like this from now on". You should not see this request again until you start another tour. My Mac doesn't have the option to open the file with Google Earth. This is small difference in the way Google Earth works on a Mac and PC. It is a minor difference and doesn't prevent you from taking the tour. Simply double click on the icon and Google will use the file to go to the first stop. This only happens at the beginning of a tour. The rest of the tour operates from within Google Earth. How do I avoid any Google Earth Issues? Take the tour using Google Maps instead. The tour will work exactly the same. Google Maps doesn't have all the options of Google Earth, but it is arguably faster. How do I drive through these tours with Google Earth? Once you've selected a tour, start it by clicking on the first tour stop on the list. Armchair Vacations will generate a special file that sends your Google Earth to the first tour stop. Once you get there, Double Click on the Thumb Tack icon in the middle of your Google Earth view screen. This opens a small window within Google Earth, and this window contains useful information on your current tour stop and easy-to-use controls to continue your journey. At the top of window, you'll find buttons to go to the Next Stop, the Previous Stop, or just relocate your current position if you drifted a little. |
