Mount St. Helens erupted on May 18th 1980.   The eruption itself was classified as a level 5 on the Volcanic Explosivity Index, but it triggered the largest recorded debris avalache in recorded history.  The combination eruption and slide killed 57 people, and destroyed everything in a 230 square mile area.
