The most famous eruption of recent history was Mount St. Helens.  The eruption was close to a major metropolitan area and captured on video before and after it happened.  While tradgic and terrible, Mount St. Helens was by no means the largest eruption in modern history.  Compare Mount St. Helens to some of the other eruptions in history and the volcanoes that created them.
